What is ACT?

Manage Your Life and Emotions with ACT

Welcome.  So, what is ACT?

If you are reading this, you might be feeling lost, stuck, overwhelmed by your thoughts, or exhausted from the constant battle to “feel better” or “get rid of” anxiety, frustration and sadness.

Many of us are taught that the end goal of mental health is to eliminate all of our difficult and painful emotions. But often, the harder we fight against our emotional internal struggles, the more power they seem to have over us.  This is where Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers you a different path.

A Different & Growth Oriented Approach to Growing and Healing

I love using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) with my clients.  ACT is a mindfulness-based approach that doesn’t focus on “fixing” you—because you aren’t broken. Instead, we work together to change your relationship with your inner experiences. Rather than spending your energy fighting a war with your thoughts, we focus on:

* Mindfulness: Learning how to be present in the moment without judgment.
* Acceptance: Creating some space for your difficult feelings so they no longer drive your behaviours.
* Cognitive Defusion: Learning to see thoughts as just words and images, rather than absolute commands or truths.
* Values Identification: Getting crystal clear on what actually matters to you—who you want to be and what you want to stand for.
* Committed Action: Taking concrete steps toward those values, even when the road is bumpy.

Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Right For You?

ACT is effective for those dealing with:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Workplace, life and relationship stressors
  • Chronic Pain
  • Trauma

ACT can also help us with the general feeling that life has lost its spark. It is for the person who is tired of just “managing their symptoms” and is ready to start building a more contented and satisfied life.   ACT isn’t about ignoring or even erasing the pain, but about expanding your perspective and life choices so that the emotional pain is no longer the only thing in it.

Take the First Step

The courage to change doesn’t require the absence of fears; it only requires the willingness to start, even while the fear is still present.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit. Together, we can explore how to end the struggles and start living a life you want to live.
