I am a neurodivergent (ND) therapist myself who strives to provide a therapy space that provides safety and respect. A space valuing your unique needs with the recognition that the world can often be a judgmental and unwelcoming place for the neurodivergent. I recognize that neurodivergence is not a problem to be fixed and cured. It’s an integral part of who we are and I try my best to value and affirm it. I try to work from a de-pathologizing, de-medicalized therapy perspective and try to step away from the traditional deficit models that direct their focus to the deficits and not the strengths of ND peoples.
To help ADHD people I use:
CBT: (Cognitive behavioural therapy) This is one of the most effective types of psychotherapy for people with ADHD. It involves helping people manage their thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours to better deal with life’s complications and everyday situations. CBT is essentially like brain training for ADHD. It is a goal-oriented form of therapy that aims to explore and change negative patterns of thinking and help reframe the way a patient feels about themselves and their symptoms of ADHD.
Mindfulness: This practice encourages awareness and building calmness through various techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing strategies. People with ADHD may find the practice improves symptoms, such as reducing inattention or reducing strong emotions.
Therapy can help people with ADHD in many significant ways:
- Time management and organizational skills
- Motivation and improving follow-through
- Developing systems that enable more wins and successes in life
- Building healthier communication and relationships
